Sports Betting Bills Sails Through House

A bill to legalize sports betting on mobile devices and online in the state of North Carolina is approaching the finish line Tuesday as it sailed through the House committee and later in the afternoon the House voted 66-45 for legalization, a sharp change from less than a year ago when a similar bill failed by a single vote.

A few amendments that made the measure less appealing like banning bets on college games were scrapped.  A ban on NC college basketball betting is practically sacrilege in the Tar Heel State.

The measure now moves to the state Senate.

A similar bill failed by one House vote last year and it is widely believed the support is now there for passage.

It's by no means a slam dunk as those against the bill have been especially outspoken.  Also we've seen a shift in sentiment for legalized sports wagering in recent months going against the activity due to the inundation of commercials and some well publicized PR gaffes as well as security lapses.

The bi-partisan bill has 52 co-sponsors.

North Carolina already allows for in-person sports betting in three state casinos.

Winnings will be subject to a 6% tax.
