US First Legal Online Poker Jurisdiction Under Scrutiny by Council Members

Three Washington, D.C. Council members intend to re-examine the $38 million D.C. Lottery contract that helped make the District the United State’s first legalized online poker hub.

Council member Michael Brown slipped the online poker provision into the budget bill while failing to disclose earnings from a firm with an interest in online gambling.

Poker pro Daniel Negreanu recently escaped the United States to his native Canada where he is now free to play online poker from the comfort of his home.

The US Justice Department indicted three of the world’s largest online poker rooms on April 15, forcing them to shut of hundreds of thousands of players including Negreanu.  The companies were charged with funneling gambling monies through a small Utah bank, masking transactions as purchases for dog food and golf balls.

California Online Poker Bill Dead Until 2012

A bill that would have legalized online poker in the state of California has been put on hold until 2012.

California state Sen. Presdient Darrell Steinberg broke the news that the bill proposed by Sen. Roderick Wright, chairman of the Governmental Organization Committee; and the other by Sen. Lou Correa would not have time to be heard prior to the end of the legislative year September 9. 

“We believe that well-thought-out, fair solutions to these differences can be reached,'' Steinberg wrote.

Online Poker Measure Could be Tacked Onto Jobs Bill

Industry observers are watching to see if members of Congress will seek to attach a bill legalizing online poker to US President Barack Obama’s jobs creation bill.
