Liz Cheney Warns of 'End of Democracy' as Online Betting Sites Show Dead Heat
Former Wyoming Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney believes that if former U.S. President Donald Trump should be re-elected, he will never leave office.
"There's no question," Cheney said about that possibility in an interview on NBC’s “TODAY” show with host Savannah Guthrie in advance of the release Tuesday of her book, "Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning."
Cheney has since appeared on various other outlets issuing her warning including MSNBC'S "Rachel Maddow Show" Monday night and "Morning Joe" Tuesday morning.
Over the last 24 hours, Trump has attacked the Drudge Report on his Truth Social platform and Matt Drudge took notice, featuring said attack among the top headlines on his website along with the Cheney story and a picture of the former President with a crown on his head.
The online gambling sites, including Betonline and PredictIT continue to show Trump in a dead heat with current U.S. President Joe Biden for the 2024 general election. BetOnline actually has Trump at +130 and Biden +200 (2-1).
Asked if she believes Trump would try to stay in power forever, Cheney said, "Absolutely. He's already done it once."
The U.S. could become a dictatorship if Trump is re-elected, Cheney warned. "I think it’s a very, very real threat and concern. And I don’t say any of that lightly and frankly, it’s painful for me as someone who has spent her whole life in Republican politics, who grew up as a Republican to watch what’s happening to my party and to watch the extent to which Donald Trump himself has basically determined that the only thing that matters is him, his power and his success."
Cheney said it's "naive" for Americans to think the country would survive another Trump presidency.
Her book is due for release on Tuesday December 5, the day this story was being published. Amazon lists the book as a number one bestseller for pre-orders.
The former President also bashed Cheney and her book. Trump refuted a claim in the book that, following his election loss, he was depressed and not eating.
“That statement is not true. I was not depressed, I WAS ANGRY, and it was not that I was not eating, it was that I was eating too much,” Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform early Monday.
“But that’s not why [Kevin] McCarthy was there,” Trump continued. “He was at Mar-a-Lago to get my support, and to bring the Republican Party together – Only good intentions.”
Trump has threatened to use the power of the presidency against his political opponents, including President Biden and Biden’s family. Trump regularly refers to his political opponents as “vermin,” as well as “thugs, horrible people, fascists, Marxists, sick people.”
Trump remains a -1000 favorite to become the Republican nominee with former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley at just shy of 6-1 odds.
Biden's poll numbers, meanwhile, continue to tumble.
In early November, a New York Times/Siena College polls showed Trump ahead in four of the six swing states and surveys this past month from 13 separate pollsters show Biden’s position is worse than their previous polls in all but two of them.
