Shackleford Wins 2011 Preakness

Shackleford wins the 2011 Preakness, just barely, as he managed to fight off Animal Kingdom down the stretch.  Shackleford was listed with 9 to 1 odds coming into the Preakness.

Animal Kingdom, the Kentucky Derby favorite, finished 2nd while Astrology came in 3rd.

While there won’t be a Triple Crown winner this year, Shackleford and Animal Kingdom should make for an exciting Belmont Stakes as both horses have performed well in the Derby and Preakness.

Shackleford had come in 4th at the Kentucky Derby, however, he led throughout 90 percent of that race and his Preakness pace was almost identical to that of the Derby.

It is his first Grade win of any kind.

It remains to be seen which of these two horses – Animal Kingdom or Shackleford – will be listed as favorites to win the 2011 Belmont Stakes race.
