A horse by the name of Sea The Stars has paid out around $5 million to punters and left UK bookies feeling like they had been taken for a ride.

Sea The Stars won his bid at Sunday's Arc de Triomphe.

Willliam Hill and Dundalk-based firm Boylesports, who held the price on Sea The Stars at 4-5 on Sunday, were particularly hard hit, according to the Telegraph.

David Hood of William Hill expressed some optimism however: "But Sea The Stars has propelled racing from the back pages to the news pages and that has to be a tremendous boost for racing. His performance is sure to create a new wave of interest and potentially a new wave of punters."

Coral reported turnover on Arc day up by 20 per cent and Simon Clare added: "Sea The Stars success in the Arc has cost bookmakers a sizeable seven-figure sum, but this was more than offset by the positive impact the superstar had on the day as a whole."

Not surprisingly, Sea of Stars is favored to win next month's Breeder's Cup.  Those odds can be found at Sportsbook.com, which is currently featuring a 50 percent cash bonus special.
