Dysfunctional Preakness entrant Lani, the Japanese horse that finished poorly at this year’s Kentucky Derby, was coming in at 30-1 long odds to win Saturday’s race.

Prior to the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, The Kentucky-bred Lani has three victories in six starts for earnings of $1,366,618 for his owner, Koji Maeda.

Once again, Lani will be ridden by Yutaka Take, the 47-year-old Japanese riding legend and 13-time national champion.

Mike Watchmaker, national handicapper for Daily Racing Form, told the New York Times he doubts that Lani is in the mold of the Venezuelan horse Canonero II, a seemingly impossible long shot who won the Derby in 1971. He described the misbehaving Lani as “the rankest of outsiders.”

To be fair, Lani was well-behaved for the most part at Churchill Downs but was separated from the other horses entering the gates.
