He’s Back: California Chrome Returns – Odds to Win 2014 Pennsylvania Derby

The 2014 Pennsylvania Derby betting odds had California Chrome returning as a -200 favorite to win.

California Chrome has not raced since finishing fourth at the Belmont Stakes.  He was widely seen as the first horse that had a chance of winning the Triple Crown in more than three decades following his impressive Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes victories.

Instead it was a horse that had not run either of the first two legs of the Triple Crown that beat Chrome at the Belmont Stakes.  That set off Chrome co-owner Steve Coburn, who claimed this was a “coward’s way out”.

Trainer Art Sherman believes California Chrome’s only prep race leading up to the Breeders’ Cup Classic on November 1 at Santa Anita will be a strong one.

If he gets outrun, he gets outrun, but they're going to have to run their shoes off," he said Tuesday. "But I think he's going to run a big race. His last two works have been awesome. I think he's ready to peak."

His closest competition is another big name in Bayern at just shy of 3-1 odds.
