Belmont Stakes Post Positions – 2014: California Chrome Gets Lucky Number 2

The Belmont Stakes post positions are now known for this weekend’s race and California Chrome will be starting from a very good spot at number 2.  This post position has yielded a total of eleven winners in the history of the Belmont Stakes.

And guess what?  That's the same number as 1973 Triple Crown winner Secretariat.

It’s also the same number Big Red drew, though he ran from the rail due to another horse being scratched.  Big Red set unbelievable Belmont Stakes records - 31 lengths and 2:24.

The post position draw in the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes is not as significant when compared to the Kentucky Derby however. 

Trainer Art Sherman is not underestimating the starting position.    

"Going a mile and a half, it's a good post position," Sherman said. "At least you can save some ground and see who's going to have the speed and where you'll land going into the first turn. It's going to be a jockeys' race anyhow, so it's up to Victor [Espinoza] to ride the race the way he's been riding.

"I can't predict who's going to go for the lead, but I don't see him being any farther back than third on the backstretch."
