PA Drilling Exec Faces 7 Years Behind Bars for Embezzling $9 Mil to Gamble

A one-time chief operating officer for a Western Pennsylvania drilling company is facing more than seven years behind bars when he is sentenced for embezzlement Friday. 

Fifty-four-year-old Larry Dean Winckler pleaded guilty to conspiracy, mail fraud and income tax fraud in February and was to be sentenced in July but the sentencing was then delayed for more than six months.

Macau Outperforms World’s Other Cities Economically

WASHINGTON (Associated Press) — Macau, the Chinese territory known for casino gambling, outperformed the rest of the world's major cities economically last year, according to a report out Thursday.

Cities in the developing world, especially China, dominated the top of the annual economic rankings of 300 cities worldwide by the Brookings Institution and JPMorgan Chase. One exception: Bangkok, Thailand, came in last, its economy wrecked by political strife.

DraftKings 4th Quarter Revenue in 2014 Best Ever: From $2.5 Mil to $17 Mil

Daily Fantasy Sports second biggest site, DraftKings, reported a dramatic increase in revenues during the 2014 4th quarter.  Revenues came in at just over $17 million compared to $2.5 million during the same period last year.

Gambler Now Asking for $1 Million in Lawsuit Against Casino for Gambling Losses

A Los Angeles man is asking for more than $1 million plus attorney fees from a Las Vegas casino, claiming he was permitted to keep drinking in the establishment last February despite being noticeably inebriated.  He went on to lose $500,000 that day betting the Super Bowl.

Mark Johnston, of Los Angeles, admits he had plenty of drinks before stepping foot into the Downtown Grand casino.

Motorcycle Gang’s Existence Revolved Around Meth, Gambling, Prosecutors Claim

A Mount Clemens, Michigan national motorcycle gang, the Devil’s Diciples, is accused of running an elaborate meth, gambling, theft and violence ring.  Six individuals have been charged and are currently standing trial in connection with the scheme.  35 others are named in a federal indictment and all are in custody.

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department has reached a $134,000 settlement with a New York woman after federal drug agents used information from her cellphone to set up a fake Facebook page in her identity, a tactic that raised privacy concerns and led to a federal government review of the ruse, according to court papers filed Tuesday.

New Credit Card Code for Online Gambling in New Jersey Should Reduce Decline Rate

A new credit card code is set to be introduced for online gambling in New Jersey come Springtime, thus helping to reduce decline rates.

Reports suggest that the approval rate for Visa cards has been around 73% on average for Visa with a dismal 44% for Mastercard.  American Express does not allow transactions for online gambling at this time.

While online gambling is legal in New Jersey, many credit card issuing banks, including Wells Fargo, have refused to allow transactions for Web gambling due to federal legislation.

Mortgage Scammer Pleads Guilty for Operating Illegal Sports Betting Ring

FARGO, North Dakota — (Associated Press) - A Minnesota man accused of running an illegal gambling operation in North Dakota has reached a plea agreement with federal prosecutors.

Court documents show Gerald Greenfield, of Bloomington, Minnesota, plans to plead guilty to transmitting wager information and money laundering. KFGO-AM reports that details of the plea agreement have not been released.

Greenfield is charged in federal court with three counts, including conducting a sports betting business and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Caesars Bankruptcy Filed Then Halted by Judge

Delaware/CHICAGO (Reuters) - The operating unit of Caesars Entertainment Corp, the largest U.S. casino company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in Chicago on Thursday to cut $10 billion of debt, but a Delaware judge intervened to halt the case before it got started. 

The unusual legal standoff marked the start of a more public phase of complex and contentious debt negotiations. Until now, the company's attempts to cut interest payments after years of red ink have been kept mostly private.

NJ Group Files Brief in Sports Betting Case: Cites Leagues Deals With Fantasy Firms

NEWARK, N.J. (Associated Press) — A court filing Wednesday in New Jersey's effort to allow sports betting takes the four major pro sports leagues to task for their involvement in fantasy sports competitions, claiming that that precludes them from dictating what the state can do.

The filing was made by the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association to the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which will hear arguments in the case later this year.
