Indonesia Begins Caning Gays, Gamblers and Adulterers… Alcohol Drinkers Too

Those found to have had gay sex, get 100 lashes of the cane.  Those charged with gambling, same punishment.

The gay sex provision was passed Saturday in the Indonesian province of Aceh.  Men guilty of anal sex will receive the 100 lashes of the cane while women found to be rubbing their body parts together could face a similar punishment.

Gamblers, boozers and adulterers were already subject to caning.

Eight convicted gamblers were subjected to brutal Sharia punishment in an Indonesian mosque before a large crowd earlier this month.

The Associated Press reports that Indonesia’s secular central government granted Aceh the right to implement a version of Islamic Shariah law in 2006 as part of a peace deal to end a separatist war. A religious police and court system have been established and the new law is a significant strengthening of sharia in the region.

On Friday, Indonesia was the only Southeast Asian nation that is a member of the U.N. Human Rights Council voting against a resolution to combat domestic violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation or identity.

International organizations are calling upon the central government of Indonesia to overturn the draconian law.
