Al Capone Miami Beach Mansion for Sale

Notorious late mobster Al Capone’s Miami Beach mansion is on the market for a cool £5.06m.  Not bad for the Miami market.

Built in 1922 on Palm Island, off the Miami Beach coast, the extravagant home encompasses 30,000 sq ft of waterfront space.

Capone bought it in 1928 and Andrea Polo of LuxuryEstate.com revealed that he chose it when he was sent out of Los Angeles and Chicago.

“During the Prohibition, Miami was one of the best places to be for smuggling. It was very close to the Caribbean and particularly Havana, where lots of alcohol came from.” Capone’s arrival caused a stir, even in a city famed for its organised crime.”

On February 14 1929, Capone was throwing a lavish party at the property the very same time a massacre was taking place in his stronghold of Chicago.  Capone’s event in Miami Beach provided the perfect alibi during the so-called Valentine’s Day Massacre where seven men from a rival gang were lined up against a wall and executed.

“Capone basically transformed the house into a real castle, and a bunker for himself,” Polo says. “You can see from the structure of the place that it was very well fortified. The walls are high, and the doors are made from heavy iron. He had bodyguards and big, fierce dogs stationed along the perimeter. He also added a large swimming pool, white marble all around and the two-bedroom cabana.”
