Will There Be a Safety in 2014 Super Bowl Third Year Straight Odds: Lay the 1-10

What are the odds of there being a third straight safety in a Super Bowl?  If you were to ask us here at Gambling911.com, we would give readers a better chance of winning the lottery than either team scoring a safety at this year’s big game.  AceSportsbook.com had the number set at 10-1 but this is one of those rare moments where we actually recommend a $100 bet to win $10 (the $100 of course if returned assuming there is no safety scored).

Okay, it is true that three teams had safeties in Week 1 of the 2013 regular season and that this year was dubbed by some as “The Year of the Safety”.

Consider this though: While the past two Super Bowls have yielded safeties, prior to this there were only three other Super Bowls where a safety occurred.  That’s 5 in 33.

Now granted if you had bet the safety happening over the last two years you would have made out like a bandit.  Typically the safety is given some of the longest payout odds in any Super Bowl at 6-1 or greater.  This year, 10-1 is the number since the oddsmakers understand just how unusual an event this would be for a safety to happen in three straight games.

They probably thought the same thing last year, but strange occurrences do come in twos.  There were, after all, two years in a row when we had a thoroughbred triple crown in the United States.  This happened in 1977 and 1978.  Since that time, we have yet to witness another triple crown.

Incidentally, last year’s safety did pay out $50,000 for one lucky sap.
