Amir Khan vs. Terence Crawford Fight Preview

Khan had a bigger payout on the line for a fight with fellow Brit Kell Brook, one that many across the pond had been hoping for and talking about for several years now. But Khan, who is a legend in the UK, opted to go this route instead.

“This ranks probably at the top for me, fighting a world champion. That is a great motivation for me to know I am fighting the best out there, one again, and makes me train harder and work harder,” Khan said about the upcoming duel.

In many respects Khan has nothing to lose. He’s a heavy underdog to who many consider the best fighter around, so losing is almost expected. A win, however, would vault Khan back into the welterweight discussion in this country while leaving a bout with Brook on the table.

Khan is a more than worthy opponent having won two titles at the 140-pound class before losing them in a controversial split-decision to Lamont Peterson in 2011 and a KO loss to Danny Garcia in July 2012. After resurrecting his career at 147-pounds, Khan jumped a weight class to challenge Alvarez for his middleweight belt in 2016 and suffered a devastating sixth-round knockout that put him on the shelf for the next two years.

Crawford dominated at 140-pounds winning all four major belts. With nothing more to prove a step up in weight was the next move. His first welterweight bout was a ninth-round KO of Jeff Horn for the WBO title. He followed that with another dominant effort over previously undefeated Jose Benavidez Jr. in October.

Crawford takes a cerebral approach to his fights, assessing the strengths, and more importantly, the weaknesses of his opponent before finishing them off with his powerful punches. His added ability to seamlessly switch to southpaw has been a distraction for his challengers as well.

The tale of the tape is fairly even and the combatants are only a year apart in age, yet their careers appear to be headed in opposite directions. Following his knockout loss to Alvarez, Khan beat two lesser foes, and this match is viewed as his last chance for that career-changing win that so far has eluded him.

Boxing Betting Tips

On paper and looking at recent form, the outcome of this bout is obvious. But, as the saying goes, the games aren’t played on paper. As a huge favorite there is always the possibility that Crawford takes this fight lightly, much like Apollo Creed did in his first bout with Rocky Balboa, and Khan is ready to pounce should that happen. That’s an unlikely scenario considering Crawford wanted this matchup and views it as a stepping stone.

Khan is unbeaten as a welterweight and this is clearly his best weight class. He has notable victories over Luis Collazo, Devon Alexander and Chris Algieri. Still, it’s tough to see anything but a win for Crawford and the odds are long making other wagers more attractive to make some money. Three of Khan’s four losses have been KOs, and Crawford packs a powerful punch that will crack that glass jaw if it connects.
