Not that the Alabama Crimson Tide has much to prove, but they are a bit irked after falling hard in last year’s national championship game.

And if they needed any more motivation that may be just what Nick Saban and his bunch need to get back to the College Football Playoff. There aren’t many guarantees in life, but having the Tide in the CFP is one of them. Alabama is the only program to appear in all five playoffs reaching the championship game the last four years with a pair of titles.

The Tide have been so good they even make the CFP without winning their division and playing in the SEC Championship. The precedent was set during the 2017 season when Bama lost the Iron Bowl to Auburn and the SEC West in a head-to-head tie-breaker. It turned out to be their only defeat of the season. Bama validated its selection by knocking off George to claim the national championship.

Alabama Crimson Tide 2019 Season Preview

After their 28-point drubbing at the hands of Clemson in last season’s CFP title game, Alabama may not be the premier program in college football. And that loss will only serve as motivation for a team that has dominated during the CFP era. In reaching the title game over the last four seasons, the Tide is a ridiculous 55-4. They haven’t lost more than one regular season game since 2010 and they routinely make the toughest conference in college football their own playground.

With Tua Tagovailoa leading the way the Tide chewed up opponents. Tua put on a remarkable display last season with nearly 4,000 passing yards and 43 touchdowns. Many of the games were blowouts and the No. 1 offense took a seat on the bench in the second half of those games. Still the Tide averaged 522 yards and 45.6 points per game.

Tua is back and so is a bunch of athletic receivers, making the passing game a strength once again. There would be concern if Tagovailoa were to miss time. He was bothered by ankle and knee problems last season and there is no Jalen Hurts to save the day this year. Mac Jones is a capable backup and Bama would just use its vast resources in the run game to cover for him. Najee Harris and Brian Robinson are bruising backs with size and speed. And behind one of the best O lines in the game, the Tide will steamroll opponents.

Cracks in the defense were exposed by Kyler Murray and Trevor Lawrence in the playoffs. And things could be worse after the NFL purged a number of key players from the group for a second straight season. Saban just reloads and his recruiting classes have consistently been ranked among the best. Those young studs will have to make a quick adjustment for this group to be as good as last season’s. While the kinks are worked out the offense will mask any concerns. Bama isn’t going to give up 30 points every game.

2019 Alabama Crimson Tide Schedule

Week 1: vs. Duke Blue Devils

Week 2: New Mexico State Aggies

Week 3: at South Carolina Gamecocks

Week 4: Southern Miss Golden Eagles

Week 5: Ole Miss Rebels

Week 6: OFF

Week 7: at Texas A&M Aggies

Week 8: Tennessee Volunteers

Week 9: Arkansas Razorbacks

Week 10: OFF

Week 11: LSU Tigers

Week 12: at Mississippi State Bulldogs

Week 13: Western Carolina Catamounts

Week 14: at Auburn Tigers

We’ve never had a 2-loss team reach the CFP and Bama’s schedule sets up nicely. The non-conference slate features a neutral site matchup with Duke to open the season and what amount to your classic body bag games in Tuscaloosa against New Mexico State, Southern Miss and Western Carolina.

The stiffest challenges in SEC play are against Texas AM and LSU and those games come after an off week. The trip to College Station is one of just two true road games from the beginning of the season until mid-November. Road games at Mississippi State and Auburn to close the season are sandwiched around the Western Carolina matchup. Bama also skips Georgia and Florida in cross over games. There might be one setback along the way, but I don’t see two, and that’s enough to get the Tide back to the CFP.
