NBA Commissioner Adam Silver tells 60 Minutes the access to betting information that comes with legalization will decrease the risk of athletes being compromised.

"I think it decreases the risk because we have access to the betting information," Silver said.

Marshall University's Mike Hamrick thinks otherwise.

"It's gambling," Hamrick said dismissively.  "It can be handled to a certain extent.  But nobody can sit here and tell you they can deal with this and be a hundred percent clean.  They can't.  They can't," he repeated.

Hamrick thinks that with legalized gambling offering so many different ways to wager on a game, including more and more bets placed during games, it may be easier to convince an unpaid athlete to influence a game. "It's very tempting. It's very tempting," he says. "They can be compromised. And-- our job is to make sure they're not compromised."

The segment airs during one of the busiest betting periods of the year, March Madness.  Sports betting became legalized throughout the United States following a landmark US Supreme Court ruling last May that abolished decades of prohibition.  The majority of states must still amend their own laws.
