After Texas poker legend Doyle Brunson tweeted that he grew thinking of Confederate General Robert E. Lee to be his hero, other poker pros immediately challenged him, in particular Daniel Negreanu.

Negreanu tweeted:

Just pointing out that when Nazis did evil things they were defending their beliefs. As you said, Robert E. Lee was "defending his beliefs"

Brunson responded:

So you are comparing Robert E Lee to Nazis????

Negreanu, a Canadian now living in Las Vegas, had tweeted earlier:

The beliefs that Jews should be killed. Robert E. Lee believed blacks needed to be slaves. Both are vile and evil

Brunson, one of the most followed poker pros on Twitter, had his supporters.

jmcbryer tweeted out:

Come on, Daniel. There's a big difference in defending a territory and implementing a mass genocide against and entire race.

Tom @Tommy2Tomatos tweeted:

To paint Lee as a pro slavery advocate is merely ignorance, he was not in favor of secession or slavery

The controversy erupted this week following a deadly rampage during a white supremacy gathering in Charlottesville, Virginia last weekend.
