How many athletes can say that? And while we're at it, how many athletes can stir up the kind of mini-controversy he has without even getting onto the "field of play," so to speak?
For those sportsbook bettors who are not familiar, White is acknowledged internationally as the greatest snowboarder of all time. He is also arguably one of the greatest skateboarders, having dominated the Summer X Games (a creation of ESPN) in that event. A child prodigy, he has had sponsorship since he was seven years old. White was won the Winter X Games for six straight years in the "halfpipe" event (scoring a perfect 100 in 2012), and put those skills on display before an Olympic audience for the first time back in 2006, when he took the gold after landing a perfect 1080 (that means he rotated 1080 degrees - just trying to keep you on track here).
Olympic bettors saw him go one step further than that in Vancouver at the 2010 Games, doing what has famously become known as the "Double McTwist 1260" and blowing away the competition. It wasn't even close.
Now he is in Sochi, seeking a third consecutive Olympic gold medal, and he is expected to unveil something completely new - a "Double Cork 1440" that will most likely clinch it for him if he is able to pull it off successfully. How likely is he to do that? Well, according to the Olympic betting odds that have been established at WagerHome.com, he is a -200 favorite to do just that on Tuesday.
Is White the closest thing to a true Renaissance man at these Winter Olympics? Well, aside from being the best in two sports at once (though admittedly there is a common thread between the two), he is also an aspiring rock musician, forming a band called "Bad Things" and traveling to various concert dates, including some on the "Lollapalooza" tour. leading up to the Olympics, he has literally split time between training for his events and rehearsing with the band, which released an LP on January 21.
Between all of that, plus his sponsorships and commercials, it is a lot to do. And there was even more; well at least there almost was. As many PPH bettors at WagerHome are aware, the Olympic Committee added another snowboarding event to the schedule this year - that of the "Slopestyle," which should be self-explanatory, right? ShaunWhite was once the king of this event as well, winning five golds in the Winter X Games, before he decided to spend more time concentrating on the halfpipe. But there was a gold medal available, so he made the decision to qualify, and thus he was the only U.S. boarder to be involved in both events.
That is, until a pullout just one day in advance of the Saturday medal event. And that left sportsbook bettors wondering why. Well, at least by his own explanation, he was apprehensive about the course, with the possibility that it could cause him injury that would affect his halfpipe performance. Then why enter in the first place? What his critics are claiming is that he got cold feet because he was not going into that event as a clear favorite, whether in the betting odds or otherwise, and thus was fearful not of the course, but the fact that he might damage his reputation.
But the interesting thing is that within the sport, the reputation might already be damaged, because there are some people who are properly pissed. One of them is Brandon Davis, the U.S. snowboarder who was most likely to have been awarded a spot on the team had White done weeks ago what many people thought he had in mind all along, which was to take himself out of the running. He tweeted, “Love how Shaun drops out of the Olympics. That could have been my spot.”
The -200 betting choice on Tuesday may be "snow White," but he may not be able to get out of this one squeaky clean.
