Expert: Horses Heat Up 10 Times Faster Than People

For anyone wondering about the stupidity of running a horse in 110 degree temps, a la Saturday's Haskell Invitational, consider this expert analysis:

Professor Michael Lindinger, an animal and exercise physiologist at the University of Guelph and a lead researcher that contributed information on the response of the horse to heat and humidity for the Atlanta Summer Olympics, explains: “It only takes 17 minutes of moderate intensity exercise in hot, humid weather to raise a horse’s temperature to dangerous levels. That’s three to 10 times faster than in humans. Horses feel the heat much worse than we do.”

Due to their higher percentage of active muscle when working out compared to people, horses tend to be more susceptible to heat.

Horses also rely to a significant extent on sweating to cool them off. They can sweat 15 to 20 litres per hour in cool, dry conditions and up to 30 litres per hour in hot, humid conditions, but only 25 to 30 per cent of the sweat produced is effective in cooling the horse by evaporation.

“Because so much more sweat is produced than can be evaporated, the rest just drips off the horse’s body,” says Lindinger. “By comparison, up to 50 per cent of the sweat people produce is evaporated from our bodies during exercise and helps to cool us.”

NBC Already Being Made the Fall Guy for Haskell Horror

A heat warning has been put in place for Central New Jersey Saturday afternoon with temperatures expected to feel like 110.  All other race venues along the East Coast have cancelled their events for the weekend, leaving only the Haskell at Monmouth Park.

The reason:  This one is going to be nationally broadcast.

Of course, they might be regretting that decision should horses start dropping from heat exhaustion.

There are races before this one so we could see the affects prior to the Haskell, which would really result in a precarious situation where they may have no other choice but to cancel the main event regardless.

Haskell Heat - Calls to Cancel Race Increase

There are plenty of folks out there who view PETA as radical, much of them animal lovers themselves.  But the public may be siding with PETA's push to get Saturday's Haskell Invitation cancelled due to the Excessive Heat Advisory issued for Saturday.  Temperatures are expected to feel like 110.  Needless-to-say, animals and people alike should remain indoors this day.

Just How Big Will Cowboy vs. Gaethje Be?

Oddsmakers at BetOnline have made Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone a +210 underdog vs. Justin Gaethje -250 for UFC Fight Night 158 in Vancouver September 14.  This is likely to attract significant betting.

Cerrone is set to face Justin Gaethje in a lightweight top contender's battle. The fight is obviously exciting, but also carries huge significance for the lightweight title.

At this stage, it's not clear who is next after UFC 242's Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Dustin Poirier. There could always be a rematch there. You also have Conor McGregor and Tony Ferguson waiting in the wings. Nate Diaz vs. Anthony Pettis at UFC 241 is a welterweight fight, but both could easily make lightweight if need be. And now there's this bout. Lightweight is about to get super hot at the end of the summer.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Revenue from regulated gambling in Pennsylvania climbed to a new record high above $3.3 billion in the just-completed fiscal year.
