Germany Wins the 2014 World Cup: Record Bets Placed on This Year’s Event

Germany has won the 2014 FIFA World Cup.  Both countries were early favorites with Argentina the second favorite at 3-1 after only the host country Brazil.  Germany was coming in at 4-1 odds early.

This was only the third World Cup Final to finish the first 90 minutes of play scoreless as Argentina vs. Germany headed into extra time.  Germany scored with just minutes left in extra time to finish 1-0.  Mario Goetz hit that one in, paying better than 5/1 odds.

Gambling911.com bookmaker partners have advised that this was perhaps the most wagered on World Cup ever.  An exact amount bet across the board was not yet known at the time of publication.

Record betting has already been reported in Great Britain for Sunday’s final.

About 40 million pounds ($68 million) was expected to be staked on the game in the UK, beating the figure gambled on the 2012 Champions League final between Chelsea and Bayern Munich, said Ladbrokes, Britain's second-largest bookmaker.

William Hill has already beaten its own 200 million pound target for betting on this summer's World Cup despite England's early exit from the tournament in Brazil.
