France was a big -350 favorite coming into this matchup with Honduras the biggest underdog of the tournament thus far at +1190 odds for a potential payout of $1190 on a $100 bet.  Costa Rica, considered the biggest underdog of this year’s World Cup, managed to knock off mighty Uruguay on Saturday, so anything is possible.

This will be France’s fifth straight World Cup appearance.  Their last one had France exit South Africa without a win resulting in a player mutiny against then manager Raymond Domenech.

Strengths

On paper, the French have a strong midfield with Franck Ribery (although he will play much further ahead of the midfield), Paul Pogba, Yohan Cayabe and Mathieu Valbuena. Pogba has had a fantastic season at Juventus and is one of the most highly sought-after players in Europe now, so this is a huge chance for him to shine.

Up front, Karim Benzema will be joined by Oliver Giroud with support from Ribery, who is reportedly battling a bad back. If he can’t produce, Deschamps’ decision to leave the fiery Samir Nasri at home will be put under the microscope. When he is on, Nasri can be an incredible creative influence, but his inability to handle being a substitute could end up being lethal to both sides.

Weaknesses

The French defense, especially in the middle, has some questions that need to be answered. Who starts out of the trio of Laurent Koscielny, Mamadou Sakho and Raphael Varane? Then there are a trio of fullbacks in Patrice Evra, Bacary Sagna and Mathieu Debuchy to deal with. And even if Deschamps finds the group he wants to play, can they be trusted in their own end of the pitch? At least they have a solid keeper in captain Hugo Lloris, but Deschamps has to find the group in front of him before the tournament starts.

Also, keep an eye on Ribery’s status because without him, France’s attack could come up limp. As powerful as Pogba is, he doesn’t have Ribery’s eye for a pass just yet.

Honduras will be making its third World Cup appearance.  They have yet to win a game in the World Cup, however.

Strengths

Manager Luis Fernando Suarez will at least have some experience to count on at the back. Keeper Noel Valladares has 121 caps for his count, while Maynor Figueroa has 103 in front of him and there are four defenders with at least 53 caps, so the players are familiar with each other and know what they have to do. The defense is going to be the only thing that keeps Honduras in these games.

Suarez knows what he has with this team and sticks to the script in terms of what they can and can’t do. He worked wonders for Ecuador to get them to the knockout stage at Germany 2006, but getting a win for this Honduras side would be his best managerial job ever. But they have been playing the underdog role up and that could inspire the team to at least one big game in Brazil. 

Weaknesses

Try as they might, Honduras just doesn’t have much of an attack going forward. Is Carlo Costy their best option up front after scoring two goals against Ecuador in a friendly in November? Jerry Palacio looks out of form at 32 years old, and Honduras doesn’t have much in the way of playmaking outside of Wilson Palacios, especially if Oscar Garcia is hurt.

Overall, Honduras’ midfield is quite weak and they could get rolled over. If the midfield can’t even win the ball back, it is going to be a long, but quick, three games for Honduras because their defense won’t be able to hold out for very long. Jorge Claros will likely be pegged for the defensive-midfield role, but he will need some help to protect the back four and give Honduras a chance.
