Political Instability Bad News for Miss World Contestants

For the first time ever, viewers will select the winner of Miss World 2008. However, contestants from countries experiencing upheaval are depicted as long shots.

Miss India, Parvathy Omanakuttan grew up in Mumbai - India’s economic capital and site of recent terrorist attack. Despite placing in the top 10 in the “Beach Beauty’ portion of the Miss World contest, Parvathy is still listed at +1200. However, India is known for it’s supportive population, and in light of the recent turmoil in the country, don’t rule out the Indian citizens calling in their support for their longshot contestant.

Parvathy graduated with a major in Arts. She studied Sociology, Psychology & English Literature.

Miss Thailand, Ummarapas Jullakasian, is also a whopping long shot contestant at + 5000, offered by Betus.com. Although the recent unrest in Thailand was mostly nonviolent, the contest for political power shut down the Suvarnabhumi and the smaller Don Mueang domestic airports, leaving an estimated 350,000 travellers stranded in Thailand, and cost the kingdom billions of dollars in lost revenue.

Ummarapas is known by her nickname Mim, she grew up in Bangkok, a vibrant and exotic city. She has a Bachelor degree in food nutrition & development, and is currently working as a model and reading books about personal financial management as her ambition is to go into Property Management.  Miss Thailand also placed within the top 25 in the recent Beach Beauty portion of the contest.

Finally, Miss Greece (pictured above) will have to stand tall for her country, despite the face that Greece is Crippled from riots and strikes. Miss Greece is listed at +4000. Her supporters in Greece may not be much help on contest day as well, as Banks, schools and hospitals are closed, and transportation and transit systems have ground to a halt in Athens.

Many local and international flights are also canceled. Angeliki was born in Thessalonica but grew up in Poligyros, Chalkidike, a place with wonderful blue and green sea and endless sandy beaches, it is situated at the root of the Cholomontas mountain. She studied at the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science at the Aristotle University of Thessalonica. She has worked as a gymnastic trainer; a yoga, pilates & aerobic teacher and is currently a Lifeguard.
