• Mid-Atlantic states get jump start in sports betting space
  • NJ opens 6th sportsbook
  • PA should have books up and running for football

Great news!  Back in May 2018 the US Supreme Court ruled to abolish decades long prohibition against sports wagering.  This means that any state can now offer the activity provided they amend their own laws.  More than half the states are expected to do just that by 2020.  Even more good news, you don't have to wait.  Internationally-licensed online sports betting sites, some of which have been in business for 20 or more years now, can be accessed from all US states.

New Jersey

The state that filed the suit and won after years of fighting the professional sports leagues.  Now it turns out they all want in.

On August 15, the 6th sportsbook opened at the Golden Nugget.

New Jersey has sportsbooks open in Atlantic City, which are easily accessible to the Philadelphia area.  Even when Pennsylvania is up and running, the AC books can still expect to see some nice action coming in from this region as the Keystone State will likely pass high taxes onto players.

The Monmouth Racetrack sportsbook in Central New Jersey is more likely to appeal exclusively to those in-state while the Meadowlands Racetrack to the north is easily accessible to those in New York City.

Draftkings has already introduced a sports betting app that is available to those within the state now matter where they might be (at home, in the office, etc..).  While not available for wagering outside New Jersey's borders, the Draftkings sports betting app can still be accessed to register ahead of trips to the Garden State as well as to make payout requests.

Pennsylvania

PA is set to open sportsbooks throughout the state at its many casinos.  Not all have applied for licensing however and, those that did, will have to plop down $10 million.  Steep taxes will also be placed on books operating here and this is all sure to be passed onto the players.

PA will have online sports betting, though the scope of access was not immediately known as of August 15, 2018.

Those living in the Philadelphia area are still more likely to patronize the Atlantic City establishments on a regular basis, even after nearby Parx opens its sports wagering facility.

New York

The New York State legislature, while open to allowing sportsbooks to run at four upstate casinos, failed to act in time for this year's legislative session.

Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, a Democrat, who is up for re-election, plans to reintroduce a bill to legalize sports betting in the next legislative session that begins in January.

This means no sports betting from state operators until after the Super Bowl.

Delaware

Delaware was the first to accept sports betting after the Supreme Court’s May 14 decision, allowing it at all three casinos in the state starting on June 5.

The state offers three modest sportsbooks, one of which (Delaware Park in Wilmington) is easily accessible from Philadelphia and the Southeast PA area, as well as an hour from Baltimore.
