Montana is expected to legalize sports betting soon thanks to bi-partisan support.

On Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, the Senate approved two bills: SB 330 and HB 725.  Both are heading to Governor Steve Bullock’s desk and he is expected to sign one of them.  He has ten days to do so or veto.  The bills automatically become law if he fails to act.

SportsHandle noted that the sports betting bills were backed by the powerful Montana Tavern Association with the idea that kiosks could be placed in its members establishments, thereby driving business in the door.  Mobile wagering will be available only within these businesses.

Golden Entertainment runs the taverns where the kiosks will be located.  They have partnered with William Hill, which offers online sports betting in both Nevada and New Jersey, and offers retail outlets in West Virginia, Mississippi and Iowa via the Horse Shoe Council Bluffs race book.  Iowa is expected to legalize sports betting soon, at which point Hill would operate a sportsbook at Prairie Mills in Altoona, IA, just outside of Des Moines.

Montana was actually one of four states, including Nevada, that were exempt from prior federal legislation banning sports gambling.  Last May, the US Supreme Court abolished decades of prohibition.
