The Los Angeles Dodgers exacted a small bit of revenge by taking two of three from Boston over the weekend, lessening the sting of the World Series loss. LA had dropped four in a row after getting trounced in the opener of that series, but they got back on track taking the final two.

Odds Analysis

The Dodgers hadn’t lost more than two games in a row since April, so their four-game slide bridging the All-Star break was surprising. They put an end to that with an awakening from the offense. The Dodgers scored a total of seven runs during their skid but tacked on 18 in the final two games against the Sox. The Dodgers swept a three-game series in LA earlier this season outscoring Philly 18-6.

Avoiding a sweep, the Phillies salvaged the final game of their weekend set with the Nationals and will look for Eflin to return to his form that had him in consideration for an All-Star nod. Things soured for him prior to the break with a 9.64 ERA in his last three first half starts. The Phils will look to take advantage of a Dodgers squad that is vulnerable on the road. And they have gotten to Kershaw in the past beating three times in five lifetime decisions at Citizens Bank Park.

Probable Pitchers

Clayton Kershaw ( 7-2, 3.09 ERA ) has been so good for so many years that  his numbers make it look like he’s done. Not so fast. Sure there have been some struggles this season, but Kershaw was vintage in his last start, holding San Diego to five hits and one earned run with nine punchouts over 7.0 innings. And that was refreshing to the Dodgers after watching their ace give up four earned in each of his two previous starts.

It will be 10 days since his last start, though Kershaw tossed an inning and took loss at the All-Star Game. His splits have to be a concern as well. Kershaw is 1-2 with a 3.99 ERA on the road and his is just 2-3 with a 4.01 ERA in seven career starts in Philadelphia. He went 7.0 innings against the Phils earlier this season giving up one unearned run in a 4-3 LA victory. The Dodgers have lost each of his last three starts.

The Dodgers are not the team Zach Eflin ( 7-8, 3.78 ERA ) wants to face as he tries to snap out of a recent funk. Eflin’s ERA rose nearly a run over his final three first half starts and his struggles have mirrored those of the Phillies rotation. The righty was sporting a nifty 2.83 ERA through is first 14 starts before allowing 15 earned runs over 14 innings of his last three outings. He’s also served up six homers in that span.

Eflin has faced the Dodgers four times during his career and is 0-2 with a 9.18 ERA. The long ball has been a bugaboo with 10 allowed in just 16.2 innings. He lasted just 2.2 innings in his only home start against LA giving up three solo homers. The Phillies are 0-4 against the Dodgers in games Eflin started.

Player to Watch

A.J. Pollock is making up for lost time. The Dodgers outfielder returned from the injured list after missing more than two months and demolished Boston pitching over the weekend. Pollock went 6 for 14 in the series and homered in each of the last two games while driving in six runs. He raised his batting average from .223 to .248

Bet Dodgers at Phillies at BookMaker.eu

After an emotional World Series rematch in Boston we could expect the Dodgers to have a letdown. However, I don’t think Kershaw is going to allow that to happen. The consummate professional has a few things to iron out, mainly getting a victory since the Dodgers haven’t done that in his last three starts. And the LA lineup got a huge boost over the break with the return of Pollock, David Freese and Corey Seager. The Phils are fighting for their playoff lives so they should come out swinging. They won’t have much success against the former Cy Young winner.

MLB Score Prediction: Dodgers 8, Phillies 3
