As one would expect, we witnessed a few upsets in the first round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Mexico

This team stunned the favorites Germany, resulting in the tournament's biggest upset.  Mexico still had great value of winning the World Cup 2018 at 40/1 odds.

What's really scary here (for the other teams) is that Mexican players were reportedly suffering from the flu when they beat Germany.

Mexico won this game 1-0

Japan

Here is a team that was a 250/1 long shot to win the 2018 FIFA World Cup and made it look easy against Colombia Tuesday.

This was the first time Japan had won a World Cup game on European soil, and the first time they had beaten a side from South America at the tournament.

Senegal

This team, which opened at 125/1 odds to win the World Cup, capitalized on some poor defending from Poland.  This matchup (and win) was not without its controversy.

M'Baye Niang sprinted back on to the field of play after injury and immediately intercepted a backpass from midfield, beating former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny and Southampton defender Jan Bednarek to the ball.

He then slotted into an empty net - to the confusion and disgust of several Poland players, who protested in vain to referee Nawaf Shukralla. That resulted in Senegal going up 2-0 before Poland ultimately game back to score a goal themselves.

It was not enough for Poland to overcome this Senegal squad.

Senegal also became the first African team to win a game in this World Cup.

Iceland

Drawing against mighty Argentina in their first ever World Cup game was seen more as a win for the tiniest country in the tournament.  They were a 200/1 long shot to win the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo is a beast and he demonstrated this against Spain in the first round.  These teams finished in a draw.

Switzerland

Another of the favorites, Brazil, failed to come out of the first round with a win.  Instead they tied with a Switzerland team that was listed at 125-1 odds to win the World Cup this year.

Russia

Yes they were a favorite coming into this one playing what was supposed to be the 2nd worst team but the team ranked lowest of them all, Russia, managed to score the most goals of any team in the tournament.

Iran

Morocco did enter their game against Iran as the favorite and left with a loss.  Iran had long 500-1 odds coming into this tournament.
